Many apologies. I think this week at Johns Island was the hottest week I have ever experienced anywhere, anytime. Unbearable. I know my work site went through 15-20 gallons of water a day (12 people), and others went through at least that much. The heat index on Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island was consistently between 113 to 119! It was just too hot to take many pictures, and then we were just exhausted at the end of each day. After taking care of other duties (with regards to morning and evening prayer and other work site related meetings), I was just too tired to blog. Many apologies for that.

To give a brief recap: we were part of a group of 75ish people, and we were randomly split into 6 work groups. So, unfortunately, I may not have pictures of some of our youth on their work sites. Our jobs included, but were not limited to: reroofing, painting, redoing subflooring, plumbing, hanging ceiling fans, building structures, cleaning, repairing siding and wall studs, and much more. In some cases, it felt as though we were taking on jobs too big, but amazingly, we, more often than not, accomplished our tasks. Not only did we do the work, but the work was quality in nature as well.

I am proud of our youth for many reasons. They were great leaders. They worked really hard, and never skipped out on work. They lead prayers and worship. You could look around and pick out our youth because they were the ones leading the way in the majority of instances. Our youth have a great sense of mission. They really seem to understand what the mission of God in the world is all about, and they are eager to partner with God in that mission. They know the love of Christ, and they are passionate about sharing it, through words and actions. So, I am quite proud of them, to say the least. Good job, gang!

So finally at last, for your viewing pleasure, here are two new galleries of pictures:

blessings,
dorian

Johns Island 2010

Hey there folks,

Wow. This week has been hot and really busy so far. But it has been a really good week. I apologize that we haven't posted blogs so far. We have been getting up way early and running until way late. The combination of hard labor and heat have really worn us out. The overall group is a bit smaller this year with about 75 people present for the mission. Everyone is split up randomly into 6 work groups, so our youth are working with youth from other groups. Pretty cool stuff.

Our students are awesome. They are great leaders, by faith and example. They are quick to volunteer, and they don't shy away from the tough stuff. I don't have a ton of pictures so far (I only have 1-2 from our group on my site), but know that things are going really well. They are doing everything from painting to replacing roofs. Amazing work!

Here's a sample below. Please continue to pray for us and the home owners.

Blessings,
dorian

Jr High Augusta: Back to Work!

Hey there folks,

Guess what? I finally have pictures from the other sites for you! I thought you'd be excited and cheer loudly.

Catherine has been taking pictures at the other two sites (they are across the street from each other), and I got the camera back from her tonight.

The youth have been working so very hard, and they are having a blast while doing it. I know our site was tough: power washing, roofing, cleaning off part of the roof, weeding, repairing the fence, and much more. The other groups had tons of painting to do, among other jobs.

The younger crew is so excited about being a part of this. They are amazing. Our group sets an example for the others, and they work really hard. I am so proud!

Today was a tough day. We had a lot of work to get done, knowing that tomorrow morning is it. At my site, we finished tearing down the tin shed, worked on putting the porch roof back on, cleaned off the rest of the roof, power washed, and more. A storm whipped up, and we had to really push it at the end of the day. Just a little bit more to finish up in the morning!

The evening was filled with games, discussion, prayer, and singing. Great last night! They a=were still pumped up and bouncing off the walls! Compline helped prepare them for bed! Well, check out the pics and we'll see you soon.

blessings,
dorian

Jr High Augusta: ReCreation

Hey there folks,

Sunday is a day of ReCreation at the Jr High Augusta Home Works mission. We go to church, have a Sunday School thing where we do skits and play games, walk the Labyrinth, watch a movie, and stuff like that. This year was unique in that we came back home for the retirement celebration for the Rev. Mary Moore Roberson. The kids thought it was cool that we were going back, and Mary Moore was thankful for our return and participation. The service was way cool, and the party was awesome. Thank you so much for you service to St. John's, Mary Moore!!

We drove back to Augusta, and we arrived just in time to join a viewing of the Princess Bride. It is my personal favorite movie of ALL time. There were many people who hadn't seen it (and if you haven't...watch it pronto!), and they really enjoyed it. I think it was my 273rd time. Not sure, though.

After the movie, we went to a nearby park for a cookout party and concert. It was really humid, but we had a great time. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, ice cream, frisbee golf, climbing on a tank, and much more. It was a blast! And we were joined by Abi Moon! It was great to see Abi. She is super cool, and she is the youth minister who started this Jr High session in Augusta. She is currently in seminary at Sewanee, going into her third and final year.

We closed the evening with games and devotion. We talked about the passage 2 Timothy 4:1-8. 2 Timothy is a personal pastoral letter to Paul's protege, Timothy. It was a letter written while Paul was imprisoned for the second time, and Paul was writing to encourage Timothy in preaching, teaching, and doing ministry.

Now the day is done, and we are getting up bright and early. Tomorrow is a full day of work, and we have a TON to do. See you soon!

blessings,
dorian

JR High Augusta: Day 1

Hey there folks,

Today was a long, hot, and crazy day. We started off with a quick breakfast, some directions, and rules. We broke into our work groups, got to know each other a little bit, and then header off.

The weekend has the group broken into three groups (unfortunately, I didn't get the camera from Catherine, so we don't have other pics of the other sites. We are at Mrs. Williams's house. She is fairly old but still very functional. She has 8 children and a bagillion grands and greatgrands. Our group killed wasps, cleaned out two sheds, destroyed one shed (on purpose), tore off the backporch roof, removed vines from the rear fence, and more. We worked hard!!

I think the other groups are painting and cleaning. I know one group uncovered a dead cat, and Austin got to remove it. That is pretty impressive! I don't think I could have done that. Everyone seems to be having a wonderful time, and they are working hard!

Again, many apologies that I don't have more pics. I forgot to get the camera from Catherine, but don't worry, we can always put up more pictures! I'm off to bed. Exhausted. We will see you all at church!

blessings,
dorian

JR High Augusta

Hey there folks,

We have a great group of 12 youth and 4 adults hanging out in Augusta, GA for the Jr High Home Works mission. We will be hear through Tuesday at lunch, spending 2.5 days working on 3 homes. We will primarily be painting, but also making some minor repairs (all age appropriate stuff).

Travel down Friday evening was pretty uneventful. We encountered some rain and storms, but we kept plugging ahead. We stopped for dinner at Chickfila in Augusta, and the group totally amused me with the girls on one side of the restaurant and the boys on the other!

It started storming again as we got our stuff settled, and it never really let up all evening. There was some gorgeous lightning! Amazing stuff. One group from TN was a bit late because of the storms and a wreck they stopped to help with. We played some games to kill time waiting on them, and then once they arrived we watched some safety and first aid videos made by youth at Good Shepherd. Funny stuff!

Unfortunately, I didn't really have much to take pictures of, but I promise the next post will have pics with it. The youth are doing great, and it is going to be a wonderful experience. Stay tuned!

blessings,
dorian

Home Works Packing Lists and Itineraries

Johns Island
Sr High Home Works Mission

Tentative Itinerary
July 18 (Sun) arrive at church by 7am - drop luggage off in gym
7:45am We will attend the Rite I service as a group
We will be commissioned during the service
After church we will pack up the bus and cars, and then head to Johns Is
July 25 (Sun) Return to St. John's for 10:30 service

Packing List
Wear work clothes, t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers or work shoes
1-2 pair of long work pants
Casual wear for the evening
This first parish Day of Mission will be a great adventure that pushes us out of our comfort zones as we seek to build relationships and serve our neighbors. Here's the day's schedule:

7:30 Breakfast and Registration
8:30 Depart for Ministry Sites
9:00 Arrive and begin work
12:30 Depart Ministry Site for St. John's
1:00 Lunch and Closing

MINISTRY SITE INFO:

Harvest Hope
Harvest Hope is our local food assistance distribution center. The team that goes to Harvest Hope will sort food donations, put together food boxes, clean up, and help them generally prepare for the up and coming week. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring a water bottle and a snack.
The volunteer team includes: Susan and Jim Barber, Bob, Susan and Lucy Graham, Rudy Jones, Carole Moser, Catherine Lockhart, Richard Valentine, Christy Terlizzi, Faxie Watt, Dana Turner, Bill Todd, Margaret Buchanan, Jason Cromer, Stacy Collins, Vera Tucker, Martha Smith, David and Laura Williams, and Rhett Hardy.

Kairos: Baking Cookies, making placemats and writing letters
Really simple! Let's see how many cookies we can bake in a couple hours in the St. John's Kitchen! St. John's will supply some cookie dough, but please consider bringing/donating some cookie dough as well. Duvy Spruill will provide supplies for other Kairos activities.
The volunteer team will include: Craig and Areli Keeney (and kids), Lee Rambo (and kids), Betty Jones, Sandy Leach, Beverly Moore, Virginia Arail, Mary and Macy How, Kathryn McCormick, Diane Clarkson, and Emily Davison.

Yard Work: William Woods
1702 Westeminster Dr. near Providence Hospital
Google Map
Mr. William Woods is mostly home-bound. He has numerous health issues, and may be having surgery sometime soon on a couple different issues. He can't get around well without assistance, and he has no family. His yard is small and needs a little TLC. See the pictures below in the slide show. It would also be cool if volunteers wouldn't mind running to Walmart or someplace to get some flowers or something to add to the yard. It appears that most of the work will involve raking, mowing, triming, and weeding.
The volunteer team includes: Jim Wheeler, Tim Close, Eddie and Debbie Williams (Mason), and Katie and Jason Gibson (along with Parker, Henry and Wright).

NOTE: I am also working on one other possible project at a parishioner's home on Wilmot. Stay posted. If you have a neighbor or parishioner who may need some yard help or help around the house, please let me know ASAP!!

Home Works
We are providing a special and atypical service to Home Works this Saturday. They just had a huge one day blitz on Apr 17. They had some loose ends that weren't finished up by the end of the day on that Saturday, so we are going to assist Home Works in getting them finished up. The thing to remember is that these homes already had huge drews spend an entire Saturday working on them. Since we are only spending half a day at the sites, we are helping Home Works tie up loose ends. If it weren't for us, Hank or Tito would probably end up doing these jobs themselves. Home Works is VERY thankful!!

There are three houses for us with very simple duties that involve primarily painting. One home needs a screen door installed. Here are the homes with some pictures and detailed info:

Mrs. Nancy Amiker
3007 Aintree Drive
Columbia, SC 29223
Google Map
We are trying to blend in some touch ups made to the brick of the home and cover up some white from the trim that got on the brick. Mrs. Amiker has the blue paint on the brick at her house (and ladders). Other supplies are in the gym at church. We will paint the top 4 rows of brick above the widows and doors on the left side of the home and on the rear. We will also paint the half circle on the front of the home. We will touch up around the side window as well.
The volunteer team at this site will be: the Komar family, the Hurst family, Gordon and Eileen Schell, and Beaver Hardy.

Mrs. Evelyn Mitchell
1548 Frye Rd.
Columbia, SC 29203
Google Map
The group that worked on this home was from Epworth Children's Home. What an incredible week!

The past two nights have been extremely busy, so I apologize for not posting photos last night. There are plenty attached tonight. The past two nights we took time to recognize every person that worked here at Johns Island. The site leaders spoke about each member and then each member had a chance to reflect on the week. Our kids did a great job explaining their "take-away" for the week. This is the event where everyone receives their t-shirt. Hank added a bonus for the site leaders - a great orange Homeworks Hat.

Saturday night is our thanksgiving meal and it was well attended by homeowners. Beyond repairing houses, our main goal was to spend time with the homeowners - by the look of the room when it was time to say goodbye, our kids and the homeowners really bonded. Then it was a mad rush for the annual ping pong tournament where we were well represented by the 2009 Champion - Preston. Despite cheering by Lynda and Beth, Jack and I had a late rally that came up short. Cliff folded under pressure and ended up getting skunked (or something like that).

Some highlights of the attached pictures include our 6:15 AM march to chapel where Cliff preached on Goats??? I am still confused... There are pictures of wild animals that we encountered this week - well kind of wild animals - Spiders and Dogs. Pictures of our prayer wall - where we prayed for all of you at home as well as homeowners. There are pictures of the best before and after house (Beaumont, Winston, and mine of course). We turned that puky North Carolina/Citadel blue house into a showplace complete with new landscaping.

Thanks for all of your prayers and if you ever have a chance to accompany our youth on a mission trip, you should. It is nice to see how great they really are! It also gives us adults a nice time to reflect on all of the blessings that we all have. We are all looking forward to being home with our families.

God's Peace,

Brandon

Johns Island 2009 Day 5

Greetings,

Another great, but hot day down at Johns Island. We have set a new record for the number of houses repaired in one session. We have completed(or near completion) of all of the original houses and all of the back-ups. The groups have all worked extremely hard and have done incredible work.

We had a wonderful supper tonight and had a few surprise visitors for dinner - Father Fletcher came to pick up Mike and had dinner with us as well as Will Moore and his new bride. It was great to see all of them.

Posted are pictures from the site that Beaumont, Winston, and I are working on. We have been working around the family trying to prepare for the funeral of the homeowners brother. He passed away on Wednesday morning and there have been many visitors to share their condolences. These visitors all commented on how great of a job we were doing and how much they appreciate us repairing Ms. Lowery's house.

After dinner Winston and Austin created a very popular game - a combination of ping pong and tennis played on the gym floor. The older kids hijack the ping pong table, so Austin and Winston got creative. It was neat to see some of the older kids come in and ask to play. I think this new game will be a new Homeworks tradition. Austin and Winston have already planned a tournament for later this week. It is really quite fun.

One more full day of work tomorrow and hopefully a few hours on Saturday and then we will celebrate with our homeowners at a special thanksgiving meal on Saturday night.

Thanks for your prayers,

God's Peace,

Brandon

Johns Island 2009 Day 4

Greetings,
Today was a great, fun day. Every site worked hard and got a lot accomplished. Most of the homes we have worked on will be done tomorrow, so we will probably be working on new homes once we are done. It was pretty hot and extremely humid this morning. After lunch, a thunderstorm rolled in, so all the sites got rained on! That didn't stop us though! We worked right on through it and were able to get a lot done. Some sites have been working on roofs, painting, building decks, and cauking. The homeowners are all so thankful for the work we have done, and it is so nice getting to know them all. We are looking forward to having another great day tomorrow!!

God bless!
Austin Lewis and Mary Sarah Komar

Johns Island 2009 Day 3

Greetings,

Not a lot of pictures to share today. Taylor Jackson had the camera, but he was way too busy to take any pictures (or at least that is what he said).

We worked hard all morning and then took off for some fun time at the beach at Saint Christopher. The highlight was certainly the fried chicken from Billy Dees. You know it is going to be good when the sign out front says: If the Colonel had our recipe, he would be a General!"

We also found out that "No Diving" signs should be posted at beaches as well as shallow pools. Taylor Jackson decided to run and dive into about 1 foot of water - OUCH!!! The best picture for tonight is the aftermath...

I will make sure we have more action photos tomorrow! A lot of the houses are close to completion, so hopefully we will have some before and after photos to share.

God's Peace,

Brandon

Greetings,

Another great, but hot day down at Johns Island. Things got off to a great start at 6AM when Santa woke us up. Everyone seems to be doing very well and having a great time despite the hard work. Today's photos are from a house on Wadmalaw that Mike Montgomery and Father Joseph Smith are the site leaders. The team at this site consists of Beth Busbee, Austin Lewis, and Jack Moore. They are working hard replacing kitchen cabinets, building a new deck/porch, etc...

Tuesday is a popular day because we head to the beach mid-afternoon for some wonderful fried chicken and some great fellowship.

I hope all is well in Columbia. We then ate and everyone went to Home Depot to pick up all of the lumber and supplies. From there, half of us headed to Wadmalaw and the rest of us stayed on the island.

Pictures posted include pictures of the house that Preston Busbee, Cliff Moore and Raiford Collins are site leaders - the team includes Taylor Jackson, Virginia Prioleau, and Lawson Smith and new friends. Preston's house (light blue 1 story house) needs a lot of TLC - replacing siding, re-roofing, adding joists, etc... Quite a challenge. The lady that lives here is blind and cares for herself.

The second house is the house that Winston Collins, Beaumont Smith, and I are working on. It is a two story house that needs exterior paint, facia work, a new front porch built, etc... Our homeowner recently had two strokes and does not get around very well. She is very sweet and offered to cook us all hot dogs one day for lunch.

The brown 1 story house has Austin McCoy as one of the site leaders and Sumter Moore, Grace Graham, Lynda Lovelace, Madelon Kneece, and Mary Sarah Komar. They are replacing the roof, repairing trim, and painting exterior, etc... We did not have a chance to meet the homeowner today. This house has ZERO shade, so think about them tomorrow when it is 100+ degrees on the roof.

The camera will travel with some of the other groups tomorrow so that you can see what everyone is working on.

Thanks for keeping us all in your prayers!

God's Peace,

Brandon

http://picasaweb.google.com/stjohnscolumbia/JohnsIsland2009DayOne?feat=directlink

Home Works Augusta Monday

Hey there folks,

Today was a hard day of work. We got to sleep in just a bit, and after breakfast, we went to church. Good Shepherd is SO beautiful! It is a really cool church that is very old school and sorta anglocatholic in a lot of ways. It has gorgeous woodwork.

After church, we split into teams and played Bible Charades! It was a ton of fun. I will post videos once we get home. After lunch, we were lead through a Labyrinth workshop. Good Shepherd has a labyrinth in the floor of their parish hall. Very cool! After that we split into three groups and went swimming.

The evening consisted of pizza, jello, games, and a movie. Two words: fun and loud. Here are a few pics from the day...

Jr High Augusta 09

Hey there folks!

We are having a great time in Augusta! We are working hard, having fun, singing, worshiping, making new friends, and so much more. The entire group is nearly double what it was last year. There are about 90 youth and adults from 15 churches and 5 denominations. We account for 10 youth and 3 adults.

We are split up into 5 work sites. One is scraping and painting, one is cleaning a house and storage building, one is landscaping and cleaning, one group is at the food bank, and I just can't remember the last one...sorry! The kids are representing St. John's well. They are working hard and having a great time doing it.

Let me tell you a little bit about where I am working. I am heading up Mrs. Patterson's home. She is 86 years old and she has lived in the same house since she was 3! She still drives and she is such a happy and sweet lady. The house needs not only paint, but a few repairs as well.

Below are some pics. There's even a rare shot of Bellinger that is just great! Her smile just beams. Check them out:

Ann Ruderman and Steve McMillan. Our home owner was Mrs. Louise Farrow. She has lived in her home for 38 years, and she just needed some help with a few repairs. She has 5 grown children, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren (the older great is 18!). She was so sweet, and she was so very thankful. A great group of us from the St. John's youth community showed up to work on her home. Samuel Miller and his dad met me a week prior to pressure wash the cornice and fascia. On the day of the blitz, we scraped and painted the cornice and fascia, we repaired her front storm door handle, we repaired to spots in her ceiling, and we also performed a couple other minor repairs. Mostly we painted. Thanks to the following for coming to help out: Brandon Templeton, Wilson and Lisa Sparks, Blair and Robin Campbell, Catherine and Winston Collins, Austin Lewis, Beaumont Smith, Ann Ruderman, Bryant Blakeslee, Alex and Rob Bowers, Samuel and Mike Miller, and Daniel Ward. I am jealous of Cliff's adventures in Peru, but at the same time, I know that I couldn't have gone back to back. I've slept a lot this week! Make sure you check out the slideshows below.

For me, this was my first week long Home Works trip ( I did go on the Junior High trip), and it was a grand adventure! I won't say it was perfect (no trip is ever perfect), but it definitely was life changing. It was humbling to be a part of God's mission and work in the world, and it was really fun and challenging to spend a week in community with our youth and the other groups. Many thanks to our adult chaperones/volunteers: Nell Brennan, Lynda Lovelace, Cliff Moore, and Brandon Templeton. Without you, this trip would not have been possible. I thank you for you time and willingness to serve. It was humbling to serve alongside you. Also, many thanks to the adult volunteers who traveled to Louisiana. I offered many thanks to you then, but I have an even greater sense of your service now. I am so very proud to be a part of a community that supports mission work so well. Also, thank you to Hank Chardos for providing a wonderful ministry opportunity in Home Works.

All told, there were about 115-120 volunteers at Johns Island (including youth and adults), and we all stayed in the same gym. It was really cold at night (some say the refrigerator type situation keeps the smell down!), and we were cooked during the day with heat indexes well over 100. We worked on a total of 13 homes, and the vast majority of the work was finished by the end of the week. There was at least one member from our group on each work site, and I heard nothing but compliments about our youth from the site leaders. Some job sites were closer to St. Joseph's Catholic Church (where we stayed) than others. My work site was 30 miles from St. Joseph's, and I put about 1000 miles on the bus during the week.

This trip was filled with many adventures and has brought home many great stories:

Harrison Hart is the youth director for the group from TN that stayed at St. John's on Sat. night. Harrison developed a certain driving reputation through the week. Sunday morning, as we were about to head out of the parking lot, he backed into a certain priest's car (luckily leaving no damage!). It seemed that as soon as we were in Charleston, Harrison's driving struck again. There was some dispute, but it appeared that he may have backed into a mailbox. The homeowner did say that it was leaning already. Hmmm....And finally, during a rainy day, Harrison got the van stuck in a water-filled ditch and had to be pulled out. Harrison received a couple of Hank's famous awards, and he was a great sport about it all.

Taylor Jackson was on another worksite that was quite a ways out, and it had the coolest mural ever in the garage. It was a portrait of the home owner at a younger age, and it was titled: Death Angel. This was the mural I alluded to in an earlier post. It featured the home owner as a not-so-clothed, angel holding a baby and shooting a dragon. That discription really doesn't do it justice. Brandon and Cliff rode me for days, insisting it needed to be posted to the blog. Cliff even called me Death Angel over the radio system. You can find the picture in the midst of the slide shows below.

Brandon was a site leader for a home that housed two incredible girls. I think they were 10 and 15. One was so bright that she was skipping a grade, and she already had her life planned out through med school and beyond. Brandon and his team made a huge difference in their lives by, not only repairing their home, and not only upgrading their sleeping arrangements, but by also being great role models and offering wonderful insight, advice, and encouragement. I think the Home Works experience for those girls will be something that stays with them forever, ensuring that they will push on to their life goals regardless of their roadblocks. I know I don't do the story justice, though, so make sure you ask Brandon about the details. Also, Anne Marie Powell struck up a quick friendship with the girls, so make sure you talk to her about them as well.

Hank Chardos (the founder of Home Works and the Johns Island coordinator) impressions were bountiful during the week. Austin McCoy does the best one. Ask him to do it for you.

We often had heavy rains and/or thunderstorms in the afternoon and evenings. Although the roof of Ms. Richardson's home was tarped (because the shingles hadn't been put on yet), it still leaked during a heavy rain. It leaked bad enough that the ceilings fell down in many of the rooms. All of a sudden the home presented a much larger task. As groups finished their respective homes, they moved over to help out at the Richardson house, and by the end of the week, not only did Ms. Richardson have a new roof, but she had new ceilings as well. It was a great example of team work and perserverance.

There are many other great stories from the trip. Too many to post here. Maybe as they come to mind, I will continue to add them to the blog... There were night runs for materials and milk shakes. Epic ping pong battles were waged every day. Nick names were handed out frequently. I hacked my cast to allow it to breathe better. New friends were made without even introducing yourselves to each other.

Home Works is also a great place to learn leadership skills. Some of our youth were official site leaders (Annie Ward and Preston Busbee, among others that I can't remember at the moment), and others took on leadership roles during the week. Patrick Dimig was the only one on his site that knew how to install vinyl siding, so he taught others and oversaw their work. During the week, he learned how to lead the installers appropriately. He was awesome. Taryn Close also was given leadership responsibilities on her site. Marshall Sheorn is known for his abundance of energy, and that energy was on display at his work site. His site leader told me that Marshall was the hardest worker on the site (sometimes leadership by example is the best kind). Our youth showed great leadership and poise. They were awesome!

The most important thing to point out, though, would be the home owners and their thankfulness. Sometimes you felt like you were putting a bandaid on a major hemorrhage. At the beginning, you really wondered if you were making a difference. Some fixes were very visible at the end of the week (new roofing, new siding, paint, repaired flooring, etc.), and some were more subtle (new plumbing, window glazing, etc.). But all told, each home was left in a much better state than when we arrived. Most were upgraded significantly! And the home owners were so very thankful. They came to a thanks giving dinner on Saturday night, and they were all so emotional and thankful. Their sharing brought many in the room to tears. On Saturday, you could really tell that you had been a part of God's mission in the world.

Thanks again to everyone. Thank you to the youth who attended (Fripp Prioleau, Virginia Prioleau, Jack Moore, Taylor Jackson, Marshall Sheorn, Blair Campbell, Katherine Gaulin, Maustin McCoy, Lawson Smith, Preston Busbee, Margaret Taylor Cain, Patrick Dimig, Taryn Close, Mike Montgomery, William Axson, Sarah Axson, Anne Marie Powell, Ben White, Anne Ward, Sarah Williamson, Stephanie Marsha, and Helen Brennan) and thanks for working so hard and so well. Thanks again to the adult chaperones/volunteers. I can't wait until next year.

Blessings,
dorian
<img width='1' height='1' I just need to hit a good, free wifi spot!

Preston is a work horse and pace setter for our group. I've heard great things about each youth in our group. They have been great hard workers. Anne Narie Powell has been a great worker as well. Each and every one of our group has been dynamic. The are working well and safely.

I am going to make time for some pic posting tomorrow. We'll have some asap.

Today was our first full work day. Everyone got dirty, and everyone worked hard. A couple sites did some major roof work. At least one site was hauling out old clutter. My site (I was joined by Preston Busbee) is in the midst of a variety of jobs...cool seal the roof, replace kitchen subfloor, work on plumbing, and other odd jobs.

The jobsites are spread around Johns Is. and the surrounding islands. My jobsite is 30 miles from the church we are staying at! Tomorrow I will have more info about each site, and I hope to have pictures too. Sorry, I wasted time trying to get pictures up. We'll chat tomorrow.

Blessings
Dorian

ps....cliff and brandon want me to post a picture of a funny mural at a homeowner's house. Yesterday (Wed.), they put the shingles on Mary Margaret's house, and they almost finished painting Catherine's house. Katie Dubose and one the St. David's kids (from Lexington) sealed the trailer roof while Thomas and Dana ripped out some rotten flooring. Thomas also moonlighted as an electrician's assistant.

Then when they get back to the church, the gang has partaken in some hard fought water balloon wars!

Today, the group headed to New Orleans. I mistook that for a possible sight-seeing day, but it was still work. Here's their day in Dana's words:

"Today we help re-organize a disaster recovery warehouse and loaded and unloaded sheetrock for two homeowners. One of the homeowners, Mr. Charles, has been living in a FEMA trailer and has to get out soon. A church group from Phoenix was working on Mr. Charles' home. It was a long day - we left the church at 7:00 a.m. Peace, Dana"

These youth are working hard and making a difference down there. It is awesome! Here's our group: Dana Turner, Margaret Ann Dubose, Paul Palmer, Katie Dubose, Catherine Collins, Mary Margaret Collins, Dendy Steddenbenz, Alex Bowers, Thomas Weatherwax, and Isaac Viard. They battled some heavy rain to get to their destination, but made it safely on Sunday.

The above pictures show one of the work groups before the rain and after the rain from a storm on Monday! I'm not sure how many people there are total, but there are three work groups. Margaret Ann, Dana, Thomas and Katie are in one group. They have been working diligently to clean out the home of an elderly woman. She lives with no electricity and no running water. Her home is full of stuff, making it hard to move around in. Their group is trying to clear her home out to help make it more livable.

Catherine Collins is the team leader for one of the sites. Alex is with her and they are scraping and painting their home. Mary Margaret is also a team leader, and she's got Issac and Dendy on her team. They are doing a roof, and apparently it is quite steep. They finished the ridge today and hope to get most of the roof done tomorrow. They are also cutting back shrubbery and doing some cleaning.

They are staying at a really large Baptist church that has been a great host. The have the run of some really cool facilities. They are working really hard and having a good time while they do it. We'll have some more updates for you later on. Keep them in your prayers, that they work safely with joy and enthusiasm.

blessings,
dorian

Here's a few more pics (thanks to Dana for the mobile pics):

The home where Dana, Margaret Ann, Katie, and Thomas are working.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_MXteSvt_OxI/SH3-JiHm1fI/AAAAAAAACKA/_zbd4yn1H5g/s320/img002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223610582550631922" />

Thomas working hard.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_MXteSvt_OxI/SH3-pYIFtnI/AAAAAAAACKY/26KQOSk3kFo/s320/img008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223611129624114802" />

Alex and Isaac chilling during lunch.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_MXteSvt_OxI/SH3-0KIs_TI/AAAAAAAACKg/90OntbB-1qY/s320/img009.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223611314847153458" />

JR High: Thoughts and Slide Shows

Wow. That trip was just plain awesome. Below are 5 slide shows, showing all the pictures that were taken with my camera. I say it that way because many times my camera got passed around by everyone, so many pictures were taken by different youth.

Our missioners were: Mary Sarah Komar, Madelon Kneece, Alexa Breeland, Ben Horst, Mile and Ellis Reese, Samuel Miller, Austin Lewis, Winston Collins, Hope Komar, and Steve McMillan. We served the Augusta community with other youth and adults from Greenville, Spartanburg, Rock Hill, Atlanta, and Augusta to total about 60 people. It was amazing to watch all these people come together to form a tight community almost overnight. Youth who didn't know each other Friday morning acted like best friends by Saturday morning.

The scripture for the trip was Matthew 9:35-38

35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." (NIV)

We had lessons and small group discussions based on this passage. If you get the chance, ask one of the youth what they remember from the scripture and small group discussions. They may even be able to recite the passage! The themes we discussed were compassion, helping those less fortunate, preaching the Good News, be living examples of the Gospel, bringing in the harvest, shepherds in our lives, and others.

We sang a bunch of great songs, and a couple may be permanently burned into my memory because the youth sang them spontaneously everywhere we went. On Sunday evening, we went to a minor league baseball game and nearly took over the place (we accounted for the vast majority of those in attendance!).

One of the neatest experiences of the weekend was the opportunity to walk the labyrinth at Good Shepherd. I, personally, have walked labyrinths before, but for many youth and adults, it was their first experience. They were very open to the experience, and everyone had a very positive experience. The Christian faith has a very strong labyrinth tradition, but it is going through a revival of sorts. It is a walking prayer tool that helps you focus on God and open up to Him. It can be very powerful. I highly recommend seeking out a labyrinth experience!

This was a great introductory mission experience for Junior High youth. Abi White Moon at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church did a phenomenal job of pulling the whole thing together. She is heading off to seminary, but she has laid a strong foundation there in Augusta, and I can't wait to take my group back. Thank you Abi, and thank you Home Works.

blessings,
dorian

Monday. = Work Day!

Today we worked. We worked hard. Really hard. I am so proud of these youth, and you would be amazed if you had watched them. They never complained. They worked stead with appropriate water breaks. They laughed and giggled, had a great time, but didn't let it slow them down either. I think we may actually finish the homes tomorrow! I know my home, Mrs. McKinnie's, is really close. The group at Augusta Urban Ministries finished by lunch and joined us at the two work sites.

Samuel had been itching to paint, and he finally got his chance. He painted like there was no tomorrow! He was like Michael Jordan with his tongue out. Everyone had great energy, and were so into the work that they would work all week on the home if we let them. We are painting tomorrow for a couple of hours, but I think it was Mary Sarah who asked if we could do more for Mrs. McKinnie. The home needs so much more than just paint, so we will find out what else HomeWorks may be doing with her in the future, if anything. Then we'll see what kind of follow up and continuation we can be a part of.

We were treated to ice cream with an hour left in the day, and that helped us finish strong. We came back to the church, got cleaned up, rested, ate pizza, sang, played games, had a lesson, discussed the trip in small groups, and we are finished the night off with Evan Almighty.

Thanks a million thanks to Hope Komar and (Speedy) Steve McMillan. They are awesome, and they were such great chaperones. We went to the 7:45am service and drastically impacted the average age of attendance. For Sunday School we had a sing-a-long time, which was really cool. We then headed into the gym for some games: Ships and sailors, gorilla man gun, and kickball. Lunch was served, and then swimming was canceled due to inclement weather. So the youth hung out, played card games and stuff.

We then took the group to a minor league baseball game and much madness insued! We got hotdogs, popcorn, drinks, and free hats! How cool! A few kids caught foul balls, and then another storm moved in...so we had to run for the cars and buses! It really was a lot of fun, and it was good to have a day or rest and play.

Tomorrow we head back to our work sites to knock out some painting. Hopefully, we'll finish the homes up. For now...here are some pics to check out from the day:

Fri and Sat in Augusta

Hey there folks,

First, I must apologize. I called my wife when we got to Augusta, but I did forget to send an email to or call one of you parents. And the kids knew we would be limiting their cellphone usage, and apparently, they were obedient with regards to this rule! Amazing! But I do apologize. We are here and we are safe!

Friday night was quick and fun. We arrived, unpacked, got acquainted, watched some safety videos (very funny stuff), had a lesson (by Rev. Mary Catherine Enockson), met our work groups, worshiped, and hit the hay. It is a great community that we have for sure. We have 39 youth, with nearly 60 people total.

Saturday, we woke up at 6:15am...can you believe it?!? We were all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for breakfast. We were treated with some great yummies. Rev. Joseph Smith lead a lesson and then we had some brief small group time to reflect.

We split into three groups: one working at Ms. McKinnie's home, one at Mr. Richard's home (I think), and the third at the Augusta Urban Ministry. The groups were split up randomly, while keeping some familiar faces in each group.

I was in the group at Ms. McKinnie's home (so at this point, I only have pictures of that work site). We scraped paint and washed the siding. That took the whole morning and some time after lunch. After that we began priming the home. We still have some priming to do, but we are well on our way to having the home painted by Tuesday morning.

It is a humbling experience to put your own sweat and hard work into improving the quality of life of a person less fortunate. I think many of the youth were surprised at how bad of shape the home was in. In many ways it is like putting a bandaid on a gushing artery. But our presence is important, and even though there are other issues to address, it makes a huge difference to a person when their home's appearance is improved (paint also protects wood from the elements). It lifts their mood and spirits, and can have a huge impact on how they approach life.

There were many other lessons learned, and lots of hard work performed. This is a great mission trip in that they are not only providing a service, but they are learning about why we do mission, and why we have work trips. We are also having fun. There are hand prints painted on the backs of shirts, and even paint on faces. The food has been phenomenal. The people have been soooo hospitable. I will probably write a dissertation at some point about everything, but only so much can fit in one blog post!

Tomorrow is re-creation day. We will worship, we will sing, we will play, we will eat, we will swim, we will partake in a minor-league baseball game, and more worship and lessons. Hopefully, I will post again tomorrow night, so it will be waiting for you Monday morning. Here's some more pictures...(check out the end day pic of the home...the beginning pic is above)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_MXteSvt_OxI/SF3C_wpAClI/AAAAAAAABUE/MvzbEobfB8Q/s320/IMG_7639.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214538344209320530" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_MXteSvt_OxI/SF3Dc_lW62I/AAAAAAAABUM/_L7PLcrQux8/s320/IMG_7641.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214538846436780898" />

Thanks again for letting me borrow your kids.
